What is the YKS Exam System in Turkey?
The YKS system consists of three independent exam sessions conducted across one weekend. All students must complete Session 1 (TYT), while Sessions 2 (AYT) and 3 (YDT) depend on your target degree track.

YKS Exam Breakdown by Session
1. TYT Session (Temel Yeterlilik Testi)
Mandatory for all students targeting 2-year vocational programs (Önlisans) or 4-year bachelor’s degrees in Turkey. Tests core knowledge through 10th grade.
- Turkish Language: 40 questions (comprehension & grammar)
- Basic Mathematics: 40 questions (includes “New Generation” problem concepts)
- Social Sciences: 20 questions (History, Geography, Philosophy, Religion)
- Natural Sciences: 20 questions (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
2. AYT Session (Alan Yeterlilik Testi)
Evaluates in-depth 11th and 12th-grade curriculum knowledge for 4-year bachelor’s degree applicants. Students answer sections based on their track:
- Numerical (SAY): Advanced Math + Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
- Equal Weight (EA): Advanced Math + Literature, Geography-1, History-1
- Verbal (SÖZ): Literature & Social Sciences-1 + Social Sciences-2 (History-2, Geography-2, Philosophy, Religion)
3. YDT Session (Yabancı Dil Testi)
Designed for foreign language majors. Offers 80 questions testing grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and translation in one selected language (English, German, French, Russian, or Arabic).
- OBP Calculation: Your GPA is multiplied by 0.6 and added directly to your composite score.
Example: An 80% GPA adds $80 \times 0.6 = 48$ points to your final score. - Bonus Points (Ek Puan): Vocational and Imam Hatip school graduates receive extra points for continuing in their field.
- Negative Marking: 4 incorrect answers deduct 1 correct answer—avoid blind guessing.
- OBP Penalty: Your OBP multiplier is halved if you were placed in a university program through ÖSYM the previous year.
