Politehnica University of Bucharest (Universitatea Politehnica din București) is the oldest and largest technical university in Romania and is considered one of the most renowned educational institutions in Eastern Europe.
The university was founded in 1818 by Gheorghe Lazăr as the first higher technical school to teach in the Romanian language, at the Saint Sava Monastery in Bucharest. It underwent several developments: in 1864, the School of Bridges, Roads, Mines, and Architecture was established, which later evolved into the National School of Bridges and Roads. In 1920, the Politehnica School of Bucharest was founded with four departments: Electromechanics, Civil Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, and the Industrial Department. Its name was changed to the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest in 1948, and then to its current name, “Politehnica University of Bucharest,” in 1992.
The university comprises 15 faculties offering study programs in various fields such as
- electrical engineering, energy engineering, automation and computer science, electronics and telecommunications, mechanical engineering and mechatronics, industrial engineering and robotics, biomedical engineering, and aerospace engineering. Some programs are taught in English, French, and German.
The university is a member of several international organizations such as the European Association for International Education (EAIE), the European University Association (EUA), and the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER). It houses over 150 research laboratories and is considered one of the most successful research institutions in Romania, having secured more than 32 grants under the Horizon 2020 program in recent years.
The university includes the UPBizz Entrepreneurship Center, the CCOC Psychological and Career Counseling Center, and the CCVSAR Center for Volunteering, Culture, and Sports. It also offers modern facilities including advanced laboratories and research centers like the CAMPUS Center for Advanced Materials and Processes and the PRECIS Center for Smart Products and Services.
The university is committed to promoting sustainability through projects such as the construction of “passive houses” that consume less energy than they produce, and the use of solar and thermal energy. It is also working to digitize administrative and educational processes to reduce paper use and improve efficiency.
Politehnica University of Bucharest
was ranked in the 1201–1400 range in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. It has also been designated a “University of Advanced Research and Education” by the Romanian Ministry of Education.
