Top Universities in Belgium
Belgium is home to a number of prestigious universities recognized worldwide. Here are five of the most important ones:
1- KU Leuven (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)
Often referred to simply as KU Leuven, this university ranked 83rd globally in the 2021 QS World University Rankings. It is the oldest university in Belgium, originally established in 1425, though it was closed for a period and later reopened in 1834.
As of 2015, KU Leuven had around 57,000 enrolled students, making it the largest university in Belgium.
2- University of Ghent (UGent)
The University of Ghent ranked 135th globally in the 2021 QS rankings. It was founded in 1817 as the first university to offer its programs in Dutch. It is one of the largest universities in Belgium, with over 40,000 students annually across its 11 faculties.
3- Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain)
Commonly known as UCL, this is the largest French-speaking university in Belgium, offering programs primarily in French. It ranked 189th in the 2021 QS rankings. The university was founded in 1834 in Louvain-la-Neuve, a city specifically built to host it.
UCLouvain is especially known for its programs in theology and religious studies.
4- Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)
Known by its Dutch abbreviation VUB, this university retains its native name in English to distinguish it from a similarly named institution.
