Silesian University of Technology is one of the most prestigious and largest technical universities in Poland and Central Europe. It is a prominent academic and research center that combines high-quality education, scientific research, and international cooperation. The university was established in 1945 in the city of Gliwice, located in the Upper Silesia region—an important industrial and technological area in southern Poland—which has placed the university in a strategic position linking industry and academia from its inception to the present day.
The university was founded as part of efforts to rebuild and develop Poland’s scientific and educational infrastructure after World War II. Many academics and researchers from Lviv Polytechnic University, which became part of Ukraine after the war, were relocated to form the foundation of the new institution. Thus, the university was born with a spirit of renewal and continuity, building on a rich scientific legacy.
Initially, the university started with only four faculties, but over time it expanded to become one of the leading scientific and technical institutions in the country. Hundreds of thousands of engineers, scientists, and managers have graduated from it, contributing to the development of Poland’s and Europe’s economy and industry.
The university has also established full degree programs in English to meet the needs of international students, covering engineering, management, and science fields. In addition, it offers several programs in other languages through academic cooperation agreements with European and Asian universities.
Silesian University of Technology is considered one of Poland’s “distinguished research universities,” having been selected for the “Initiative of Excellence – Research University” (IDUB) project—a governmental initiative aimed at enhancing the global competitiveness of Polish universities by improving the quality of research and innovation.
The university is located in Gliwice, a modern industrial city and one of the cleanest cities in Poland. Gliwice offers a blend of modernity and heritage, and provides a very student-friendly environment, with a low cost of living compared to other European capitals and excellent transportation and infrastructure.
Additionally, the university has branches and educational facilities in other nearby cities within the Silesia region, such as Katowice, Zabrze, and Bytom.
