Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is the oldest institution of higher education in Romania, founded on October 26, 1860, in the city of Iași, in the northeast of the country. The university is named after Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the first ruler of unified Romania, who played a key role in modernizing the Romanian state through significant social and educational reforms.
The university’s roots trace back to the Vasilian Academy, founded in 1640 by Vasile Lupu. When it was established as a modern university, it started with three faculties: Law, Philosophy, and Theology. Today, it includes 15 faculties and hosts over 20,000 students, making it one of the largest universities in Romania.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is a leading center for scientific research in Romania, actively involved in over 400 research projects at both national and international levels. The university is a member of several global academic networks, including the European University Association (EUA) and the International Association of Universities (IAU). It also maintains partnerships with over 650 universities worldwide.
