AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków is one of the most prestigious and important technical universities in Poland and Central Europe. It is renowned for its long-standing history and excellence in academics and research in engineering, technology, and the natural sciences. The university has played a pivotal role in the development and modernization of Poland’s modern economy, particularly in fields such as mining, energy, information technology, and artificial intelligence.
The university was officially established on April 8, 1919, under the name “Academy of Mining” (Akademia Górnicza) in Kraków, Poland’s historical and cultural capital. At that time, there was a pressing need for an institution to train engineers and scientists to advance the mining sector and heavy industries in newly independent Poland. Classes began in October 1919, and the university quickly became a national and international center for technical education.
During World War II, the university was closed by German occupation authorities, and many of its professors were arrested and sent to concentration camps. After the war, the university resumed operations and expanded its fields of study to include modern sciences. It was later renamed AGH University of Science and Technology, in honor of the Polish scholar Stanisław Staszic.
AGH offers a wide range of English-taught programs to attract international students and is known for its high-quality education and globally recognized standards.
The university is one of the few Polish institutions classified as a “research university” by the Ministry of Higher Education. It actively participates in international research projects funded by the European Union and other global institutions. AGH hosts cutting-edge research centers and modern laboratories supporting industries in areas such as energy, AI, and advanced technologies.
AGH is also a member of prominent international networks such as EIT Raw Materials, CERN, and ESA, working on sustainable solutions to global challenges including climate change, clean energy, and digital transformation.
The university’s campus, located in the heart of Kraków, is one of the largest and most modern in Poland. It features state-of-the-art educational buildings, large libraries, advanced labs, tech centers, and integrated student housing. AGH also offers a vibrant student life with numerous scientific, cultural, and sports clubs.
AGH currently hosts over 18,000 students, including more than 1,000 international students from around the world. It is a key partner in student exchange programs like Erasmus+, and provides extensive support for international students through language courses, orientation centers, and cultural integration activities.
