History of the University of Miskolc
The university was founded in 1950 during the socialist era in Hungary, driven by the need to develop specialists in heavy industry. Initially, it was named after the communist leader Mátyás Rákosi.
In 1952, the Faculty of Metallurgy moved from the city of Sopron to Miskolc.
Between 1952 and 1957, the Faculty of Mining also relocated entirely to Miskolc.
The faculties that remained in Sopron formed what became known as the University of Forestry, which later became part of the University of West Hungary.
Today, the University of Miskolc is considered one of Hungary’s leading universities, providing high-quality education, conducting innovative research, and maintaining strong ties with industrial sectors.
